1.5 Thesis Statement

  • Understand what comprises a thesis statement.
  • Predict the content of a paper based on the thesis statement.
  • Revise your thesis statement of the diagnostic essay.

What does a thesis statement include?

Look Back your Diagnostic!
  1. On top, write down whether your diagnostic essay is argumentative or analytic.
  2. In your diagnostic essay, mark introduction, bodys and conclusion.
  3. Highlight your thesis statement in yellow.
  4. Highlight main ideas from each body paragraph in green.
  5. Check whether your thesis statement includes Part A: the statement of purpose and Part B: your main ideas/ arguments.
  6. Check whether you can preview the content of body paragraphs in the thesis statement.
  7. Write a new thesis statement based on what we have learned today.

Let’s look back your diagnostic essay with new perspective, Thesis Statement. Write a paragraph about questions below. (10 to 15 lines are good.) Example Format

  • Do you think your thesis statement includes Part A: the statement of purpose and Part B: your main ideas/ arguments? 
  • If you have both Part A and Part B, point out where you have them. If you do not have either of them, point out what you have and what you do not have.
  • Can audience preview properly the content of your diagnostic essay by reading the thesis statement in introduction? If so, why do you think so? If not, how do you want to change your thesis statement?
  • Then, write a new thesis statement and explain why you change your thesis statement in a new way. 


*Name the file as thesis statement.

*Submit it on Dropbox in Engineering Activity.
