3.2.2 Choosing Sources

Today’s lesson will be about:

Attendance

Objectives
You will be able to:
  • Discuss and use efficient strategies to go through the process of source selection.
  • Analyze sources based on criteria, such as relevancy, purpose, readability, and connections, and be able to decide the most appropriate sources for a research paper.

Concept Map

Go to the googledoc.
Read Jamie’s concept map. It has weaknesses/limitations, counterexamples and missing parts of Solution 1. Then, come up with some combinations of keywords on #3. You can put more keywords for #2 as well.

Source Selection Chart

Relevancy: How often do I see keywords that are related to the solution? How relevant is this source to IRP? Which part of outline can I fit this source into? Background information? Description? Weaknesses? Improvements?
Purpose: What is the purpose of the source? Persuade? Inform? Recommend?
Readability: Will I be able to actually read this source and understand the content?
Connections: Can I make connections among any of the sources? Look for common ideas across more than one source; I want connections.

In groups, find one source from school database for Jamie’s IRP, Solution 1. Follow the link here: http://www.library.illinois.edu/ Fill out the google doc (Source Selection Chart googledoc) with the information of the source that your group finds. Your group will present the source that you find to the class, and we will pick two most suited sources for Solution 1.
Go to the Source Selection Chart google doc and vote for the best suited source!
