1.3 Audiences: Communication Model

Today’s lesson will be about:

  • Describe the communication model and how it relates to academic writings.
  • Identify which ENCODING strategies may be used to communicate with various audiences.

Watch the Youtube video Communication Model and fill in Communication Model Worksheet regarding the significance of the terms in groups.

Comparison Audiences
Two samples are from the same student, Fatimeh Ghazi (Egypt), but with different audiences. 
Read Audience & Purpose Discussion handout and guess which sample targets whom as its audiences. 
Then, discuss the questions in groups. 
Look how the emphasis changes depending on the author’s relationship with the audience.

1. Consider the following differences between the two: vocabulary, examples used, sentence structure, use of pronouns, specifics mentioned, organization, tone, etc.
2. What did the writer include in the first example that she left out in the second? Why?
3. What did she include in the second that she left out in the first? Why?

Audience and Diagnostic Essay (Engineering Activity: Portfolio 1)
Think or look back to your diagnostic essay. Who did you think the audience for the diagnostic essay? How can you tell from your writing? Is there something you would change with this new perspective? How do you want to change? Why?
*** Don't start Engineering Activity yet. I will give you more detailed instruction on this Friday in class (Sep, 6).
